Just a Broadway Baby

Man, I love theater. Especially musicals. Especially Broadway musicals. Especially when those Broadways musicals come to San Diego, so I don't have to fly to New York.

Ryan and I went to the last showing of the Broadway National Tour for Spring Awakening. We're both in love with the soundtrack, and I'd watched most of the youtube videos (that is how I normally get my dose of Broadway - gotta love those kids who sneak their camera in and upload for the rest of us to share the experience), so when Ryan told me the national tour was kicking off in San Diego, I was so there.

Of course, Spring Awakening is a bit scandalous. So we made sure we got a pic of our scandalized faces outside at one of the posters. I think the security guard was amused with us, but really, there's got to be tons of people who've done this pose:

It really is a brilliant musical, despite the few, ahem, unnecessary scenes that up the awkward level way past anything else. But surprisingly, it wasn't nearly as bad as I thought it would be in real life. And for the most part, the actors and actresses kept in line with the way it was originally done in New York. Except for the second to last song, which cannot even compare to the original. It was like they forgot all about effects to add to the emotional tension of the number.

Since it was my first real Broadway experience (may have been Ryan's, too... Ryan?), I wanted to see if the actors were going to come out and sign autographs and take pictures like they do in New York Broadway, so Ryan and I went looking for the stage door. We took a break to take that above picture, but wonder of wonders, the amused security guard just so happened to be setting up the barrier right there for the actors to come out and mingle. So we ended up right on the line on accident.

Here's some pics of the whole posse of actors:

The girl in the bottom left of this pic is the female lead of Wendla, Christy Altomare. The boy in the white shirt further back is one of the male leads, Melchior, Kyle Riabko.

This girl right here was on Canadian Idol a few seasons ago. She got fourth place, and Ryan and I joked that it was like seeing Jason Castro on stage.

Here's Ryan with Gabrielle Garza, who plays Anna.

And me with Blake Bashoff, the other male lead, Moritz.

I don't know if by adding this video code it will show the actual video or a link or what, but here's a link/video/surprise of the last song of the musical. Sooooo good. (Ryan, this is where I watched Those You've Known- watch it and tell me which you think is better, today's or the original.)

Lazy Crazy Hazy Days of Summer

Boo. I got ice cream on my laptop. Dreyer's Dibs delectable ice cream bites to be exact.

Ah, sacrifice.

Anyway, more fun pictures from Jess' baby shower, below. I'm very pleased with myself about them (and clearly still in a black and white mode), except for one thing: when I was taking the pictures, I didn't realize I had my ISO set to the max, which lends for some slightly grainy shade pictures. I've got to remember that the Rebel doesn't automatically reset all my settings when I turn it off-- it keeps it exactly the way I left it from taking pictures at midnight the day before. Lesson learned, I suppose.

This one's not from the shower- I just really liked the lighting in the hall. :)
Ahhh, what a cute little basket! I wonder who gave that to her? And that hat is just adorable...

Perk of being the big sister: you get presents, too.

Someone knitted this blanket for Jessica. How awesome is that?
Today is a great do-nothing day. So far I have done... nothing of great consequence, although I've been really meaning to write. I got a lot done on Thursday night when a bout of insomnia kicked in and I couldn't fall asleep until four a.m., finally in the second half of my book, with the roommates offering encouragement every time they see me parked at the kitchen table for hours on end. (Or on the floor. Or the top of the stairs. Or the right most seat of the big couch.) My deadline is something like mid-September, and who knows if I'll make it, but at least I'm trying.

In book news, we got the proofs for the latest CTP books on Thursday. They look awesome. It's still amazing to me that we can make books. Absolutely amazing.
Katelyn dragged me down the street earlier (during my do-nothing) to watch Brian's cousin's AYSO game. Oh, Soccer Saturdays! How I miss you! Can't wait to have cute little kids who live for kicking things. My plan is to give them a ball as soon as they start walking. That way they'll be pro by the time they hit age 4 and can officially start playing. Yes, I plan to breed hopefuls for the the US national team 20 years from now. It's part of my plan for world domination.
Well, I'm off to do something productive. Monday's a holiday, and Tuesday I'm going to set, so I've got a book manuscript to finish this weekend. Our first one that's not Glen's! I'm hoping not to screw it up, and figure since so far we're 4 for 4, my chances of it being pretty decent are okay. Although, I am trying some new formatting designs with this guy, so we'll see!

A little teaser for Jessica

Hey, Jess! How's it going? I know you're waiting for those baby shower pics... still going through them, but here are some I've found particularly nice. And I'm in a black and white mood, so they look all snazzy and everything.

Toodles!

PS- Lizzie took this one during her trial run with the gloriousness that is the Rebel. Thanks, Liz!

Repeat?!

Is it seriously raining outside? First June and July take a hit with the rain, and now August? What kind of summer is this?!

Sadness

Well, vacation week went splendidly, if I do say so myself. A little working on set, a little organizing my room, a little burning DVDs of all my VHS camp tapes. I even got in about 250 words of writing. Fairly productive and all that. I'm sad to see vacation week go- it's been fun having no responsibility for work, but it's got to end sometime. Tomorrow will be absolutely crazy at work with the jazillions of e-mails I missed and getting thrown back into manuscripts and proposals and editing. Oh my.

But at least I still have a good eleven hours left right now. I'm headin' to Coronado to play some OTL with the college group, and NOT think about any work-related activities. Not one!

Wish luck to team Neil-Nathan-Jordan!

A Day in the Life of an Extra

First of all, hip hip hooray (as Sonia likes to say) for Costco's photo center: 50 free 4x6 prints if you send in your order online. Go people, go upload!

Second, hip hip hooray for the best day on set ever. I should have kept track of the schedule all day, but I was too lazy, so hopefully I'll remember all the fun here.

(All times are approximate.)

7:00am: Katelyn and I leave the apartment and head for Imperial Beach, making sure to stay LEFT on Palm Avenue, as noted about seven times on the directions.

7:15am: We pull into the specified parking lot; it's already filled with all the trailers and kitchen crew, so we're directed to another lot six or seven blocks away and bused back to base camp.

7:45am: We wait in the LONGEST WARDROBE LINE EVER while simultaneously trying to finish our breakfasts; Andy calls to ask if I can bring him a breakfast burrito; he didn't get to stop long enough for breakfast.

8:30am: We're bused to the beach and almost immediately set up for the first scene. We're on episode #3 guy, who is shorter and not quite as cute as episode #2 guy, but I did notice that he slowed down to check out what book I was reading, so I give him an 8 for not being a self-absorbed, see-straight-through-the-extras kind of actor.

10am: It's chillax time. We've set up camp on the big grassy area above the beach. Gene even lugged over a canopy for us. We decided he's like our camp counselor, always keeping track of us and answering our questions and telling us to put on sunscreen. It's cute.

10:30am: There's a call for extras and Katelyn and I are among the 10 or so who don't make it in. Which is fine with us. We lay out and work on our tans and books with a few other girls while the leftover guys nap in their beach chairs. What a peaceful morning it was.

11:30am: New scene! We are so there this time! This is where we are first introduced to Scott, who is apparently trying to commit all the extras' names to memory, which we think is awesome. Scott's job is to set us all up, direct us where to go, give us actions to do while we're going there, etc. Katelyn gets set up with another girl on a couple of towels right behind the main actors. Scott directed me to walk behind the actors and join Katelyn and Other Girl. If ever there was a shot we were shoe-ins for, this is it, people.

1:30pm: We sit around while Gene picks off people a few at a time to send home; they only need about half the group for the remaining scenes. Luckily, since we missed being in the one earlier scene, we're good to go for the rest of the day.

2pm: Lunch! And it was the bestest set lunch I've ever had! Whatever they put in that chicken... yu-um. And cheesecake! And Andy got to eat with us!

2:30pm: Wardrobe change and back on the bus, this time headed to a street setting a couple blocks away. This time we set up camp on corner down the street from where the scene was taking place. Here are Katelyn and me, with the remaining extras, "working that street corner" as one of the girls jokingly put it.

3pm: Gene sends us back to Scott and we're off for another scene. Katelyn and I ended up being last ones used, and I assumed we'd be set somewhere in the far background, but Scott points me just to the right of the camera guy and tells me to walk straight across the camera in front of the actors on action. Whoa! Foreground! Never done that before. It was really awkward, trying to make my face look like I wasn't absolutely terrified to parade two feet from the cameras on my left and two feet from the actors on my right. Pretty sure I have no future career as an actress. Over and over again we did this. And everytime we reset, I had to get back to my spot and stand there awkwardly amidst all the crew and important people and lighting equipment. It's hard to stay out of their way when they're moving so fast.

Note: Part of the reason the day was so great was the background who were there. Generally you have quite a mix of normal people, quiet people, divas, and sleezy guys (ahem, boy who practically groped me last week). Somehow only the normal people got left behind, and it was awesome. We were having a blast joking around, and fighting for the best hiding spots out of the camera's range when we'd finished our walk. One of the guys and I started racing to see who could get to one of the storefronts first. I totally had him beat until we started the scene at halfway marks and he totally fudged his spot to be further along in his walk than me. Good times.

4:30pm: Gene calls for another wardrobe change; we all look at each other blankly because a) we'd already gone through all the set clothes wardrobe had assigned us, and b) most of us had used up all of the clothes we had at that point. So we start mixing and matching and sharing shirts until we come up with things that look different than what we'd previously worn. Then we secretly basked in pulling one over on wardrobe. (We do not care for the wardrobe people on this show. They take too long to pick our outfits and then stick us in things we don't like. Or set us in the outfit we show up in for the second scene, so we have to change twice. Plus the one girl lurks around to make sure we're all wearing exactly what she told us to, and somehow she remembers all of it.)

4:45pm: That blasted wardrobe girl comes around with extra shirts for us all to wear. Darn her. We do a fun scene where the cameras are getting a wide angle of the street and we're all just walking anywhere, having fun. During one of the stalls we talked with Sound Mic guy about how he only gets tired holding the mic when he has to stretch it all the way out... like so.... Poor Sound Mic guy. During another stall one of the crew guys invited us to hang out when filming was over. Seeing as how the crew don't talk to us mere background, this was of course a flattering proposal, but, if you'll remember, the remaining background did not consist of any divas or sleezy guys, so I'm pretty sure the crew ended up partying by themselves. But it's still nice to be asked.

5:30pm: Andy asks if he can sneak us anything from the special cart (read: mere extrs can't touch). I ask for a coke; Katelyn asks for a cookie. Andy brings back both the coke and the mother of all chocolate chip cookies. Maybe SAG is something to look into....

6:30pm: Wrap time! We collect our vouchers, give back our unwanted wardrobe choices, and head out. Katelyn and I choose to walk back to the lot rather than wait for the bus to fill, and by the time we pull back out onto Palm, the bus is still waiting off base camp. It's only been about half an hour since the director called for checking the gate, and already the street has no signs of ever having a camera crew set up for half the day.

And that's my long and detailed day yesterday. Great fun on set. Sad that Brittany missed it :( but she's got a real job now :) and couldn't make it. Maybe Friday....?

Where the Turf Meets the Surf

And where this:
Turns into this:

Thanks, Bing.
My mom dragged Britt and I to the race tracks today. I was fully prepared to have un-fun, but she promised me lunch out of the deal. Lunch kind of sucked, but I made $4, so it all evens out.

Finn's Bar Initiation

Waiting for Michael Phelps' final run is a perfect time to catch on up the ol' blog. About 45 minutes away now-- the women's marathon is just finishing up. Makes me wish I could run... for more than five minutes. I hate long runs. Give me short sprints any day.

Anyway.

So yesterday was a short day on set. It was Friday, and pretty much the only thing we heard from anyone who was in charge of anything was "It's Friday," in a tone that really said, "Come on, people, it's Friday, let's just get something on film and go home."

It was the first time we've been on the new sets, and we were in the Finn's Bar and Restaurant the whole time. It's a bit of a claustrophic set, not like the VM cafeteria that was very open and airy. There's three main areas to the restaurant, with two being divided by a moving wall that a couple of set dressers kept moving all over the place. Ryan and I got set at a table right next to the bar at one point, and we were able to discover how the set dressers make alcohol: Coke mixed with apple juice for any amber colored drinks, and watered down gatorade for the fruity girly drinks. We thought it was funny that they were using brand name Coke and not something like Safeway brand for a wasted drink, but whatever. Watered down gatorade isn't too bad, by the way.

Apparently my eyes are a dazzling blue under the set lights because both of the guys I ended up set with during the night commented on them in mime speech. It was the only genuine thing that I actually understood from either of them, seeing as how most fake background conversations consist of "Oh, really?" and "Oh, I see," and "Do you come here often?" I was trying to think outside the box last night (for my own amusement, since they had no idea what I was saying), and pretended I was watching the Olympics on the bar TV. I think my guy figured out what I was talking about at that point, but then he switched back to offering me a sip of his coke and apple juice for the second time and we were back to making the loop of safe mimed comments.

As long as they keep the two scenes shot yesterday in the episode (#3), I think we're all definitely going to make it in. In both scenes I'm set right next to the actress playing the waitress (we secretly called her Wendy the Waitress, from How I Met Your Mother), and during the last scene her start point was actually talking to me and the guy I was with. I didn't recognize the girl from anything, though she did look familiar, and I think she's pretty new to the biz. She was really nice to us talking in between takes unlike certain cast members who I had to step out of the way for in fear that they would walk right into me. I swear, Kristen Bell never acted like the people around her were invisible, and she was a very well known actress. Unlike certain cast members on this new show.

Here's us waiting to get called to set! Check out my comfy set chair- it's even got a footrest.

Ah, the life of the background is just so hard.

More of that. Look how much fun they're having!
Video game= perfect girl talk time
Britt gets her new camera = I get to be in pictures now!
Like this one!

Ryan was so awesome to let us borrow his Wii.

So, this isn't the best picture, but man. It just sums up the spirit of competition, doesn't it?
Alicia, me, and Jen
Bustin' out of the Smash Brothers

Rabbids! It'll make your arm muscles ache for a week.

Game glaze.

New Ryan's birthday card:
Hello, 24. So far, I think we're getting along excellently.
All in all the party was great fun. Thanks to Ryan and Jared for supplying the games/running home for lost parts and everyone who came to have fun with us!

Almost There!

Just say no to blog slacking!

Okay, forgot to post the video from our O.B. on set experience. Not terribly great quality, but what can you expect from a phone? At this point, all us background are lounging on the beach getting a tan while they spend an hour filming a scene that only requires the main actors. Sonia took the opportunity to catch up on the hours of sleep we missed because of pillow talk with Jenna until midnight and then getting up at 4am.

Next up was the world premiere of Alice! Some CCT guys put together a brand new rock high school version of Alice in Wonderland, and the premiere ran only two weekends. It was a decent musical, but could definitely use some work livening up the middle, which was looooong and uneventful. Act two picked up almost immediately with the appearance of Ryan Hansen (roommates past and present, you may remember him as Dick Casablancas on Veronica Mars) in a hilarious number that was a cross somewhere between Robin Hood Men in Tights and what I can only imagine would be the actual Dick Casablancas' experience in musical theater.
Almost done with the updates now! Just got to post the birthday pics and we're good to go for a review on our Ex List experience last night.

Next up: Hollywood

There's a new show in town (RIP Veronica Mars), and the Monday after ComicCon, Brittany, Sonia, my sister, and I headed down to O.B. for filming of the second episode of the Ex List (does it sound stupid to you? It sounds stupid to me). Justin had called us a couple nights before for the roles of runner, race volunteer, pedestrian, and race volunteer, respectively.

After the 27th lap around Newport, Brittany was really regretting her agreement to be in the race. Sonia, Britt, and I, however, were sitting pretty. Well, Britt was sitting pretty. They stuck her in the bar window, and I told her she could totally sneak her book in between filming. Which she did. The only person on the entire street who couldn't care less that B-list Hollywood stars were filming a scene six feet in front of her. Sonia and I, the good race volunteers that we were, got stuck standing in the street for a couple of hours while they went through all the shots. There was very little structure going on where background was concerned; everyone else kept disappearing, either back in the bar or around the corner to base camp.
The bar thing: before base camp was set up, we got to hang out in the Irish pub they were using for the exterior of the cafe. My little just-turned-18 sister's first time in a bar. I was so proud. I took pictures. And then sent them to Mom and Dad.

Here's us in the pub! (Darn backlighting ruins pictures.)
More info later. Brittany, Ryan, and I are going up tonight to be on the new sets for the first time. (I seriously might cry if I see how they've torn down the VM cafteria and dorm room and made it into the new show's sets, but Andy assures me we won't be on that part of set.) More pics and details to come!

Back the Truck Up: Comic Con

Okay, so I see what's addicting about watching the Olympics. It was a good night. Not for the Americans so much. Even the Canadians were whipping our tails in the diving competitions. And those Chinese synchronized high divers are something else. They totally deserved the medal.

But, on to other things. Like going back in time.

Comic Con!

Impressions:
It's nice to have hobbies. However, some people are just too into some things.
Comic Con is not a place for children.
We should have gone on Saturday.

Highlights:
The chance to see Neil! Patrick! Harris! From our fave show, How I Met Your Mother!

Disappointments:
Neil! Patrick! Harris! not being on the panel after all. Some last minute cancellation. Boo, NPH. Boo.
No Heroes panel. No Office panel. They were all the day before.

All in all, it was fun because of who was there: me, Jen, Justin, and Justin's cousin Brandon. We're a fun group to do stuff like this... probably because we all know we're geeks... just not the extreme of those around us. It was like we were the cool kids.We had a game going of who could find the most geeked out person. Justin won.

Yes, that is Justin's nerd shirt.

Pop Culturally Correct

Man. A lot of people love the Olympics. I've kind of never really gotten into it. I think we watched some of the preliminary swim tournaments a couple months ago. That's about it.

But everyone's been talking about it, and I'm starting to feel a little culturally ignorant. Today the forty-something-year-old guy who works at our copy place was bubbling over with Chinese gymnasts this, American gymnasts that, and I was all, "Um, Germany's not playing in the soccer tournament. That's about the extent of my knowledge on the subject. Oh, and I heard that Phelps guy's doing pretty good."

So, in my attempt to know more things, and since the start of my 24th year marked the start of the 25th summer Olympics, I have set up camp in front of the TV tonight, tuned into NBC (I had to ask my copy guy what channel to check out), and ready to watch me some Olympians.

So far... water polo? Please.

Where are my cute futbol players?

The Haircut

So I have been a slacker blogger lately. I know.

In an attempt to redeem myself, I will now go back through the last two weeks or so and address anything I forgot to write about/didn't have time for/didn't have pictures to tell the story/glossed over. This will not all happen tonight. We'll call this more of a progressive project strung out over this week. Hey, I've got other things to do (read: finish my novel asap).

We kick off with one of the glossed over subjects: the haircut.

So I went in fully thinking I was NOT going to cut my hair. I wanted to hang on one last time. Then I was in the chair and I decided to let Jenafer decide. Her vote was snip, snip. Complete with scissors for embellishment. So I did it, and I'm glad I did it. It was the best choice and fortunately Jenafer was the one to realize that and tell me.

And since it's been nearly a month since the cut I actually have pictures of all the different ways I can now "style" my hair. Style, of course, being a loose term for the word... it's more like, I can manage it in a way to not look completely idiotic.

(Please dismiss the complete candid-nicity of all featured photos. No time to throw them in PS and make them awesome. (Did I mention I should be typing fiction right now? And not wasting time here?))

1) Down/slightly curly

2) The short ponytail! I've always wanted one of those!

3) The headband (that suprisingly stays on my head)

4) The pigtails

Hmmmm. I'm missing 'pulled back with bobby pins' and 'down, completely straight, no waves whatsoever' (also known as 'normal').
And that, my friends, is the story of the haircut. Browsing through my 'what I've done recently' list, I figured the next thing that I glossed over is the cam... then I realized from all the blogs posted about said subject, it probably wasn't so glossed over as I thought. (Then why do I feel like I've hardly begun to even tell you all about it's amazingness?... Oh, yes, because I'm IN LOVE WITH IT.)
Next up: Comic Con!
